Dear Audrey,
You are in my thoughts. I only knew John through one facet of his life which was our mutual interest in hedgerows. When I joined the Devon Hedge Group he was the first person to welcome me and he had that ability to make every body he met feel at ease.
He had such a broad and deep knowledge of the countryside and we all drew from this whether it was on practical matters such as restoring a particularly massive hedge or more learned matters about such things as which species to plant in new hedges to give them some climate resilience. We used to discuss all things farming and I know he cared deeply about the rural society he lived and worked in. John had the ability to see the problems we are facing from a range of points of view and was equally at home with farmers and environmentalists and he was a wonderful example that they need not be mutually exclusive as he was himself a wonderful example of a man who spanned both worlds. The last conversation I had with John he mentioned that he wasn't sure how many more years he would be able to work his hedges and fill up his log store given that he was eighty five another mark of the man.
He will be missed by so many of us for his intellect, generosity, friendliness and his ability to transmit his knowledge and values to us.
